While we don’t like to give all the surprises away here is a sneak peek. As the day breaks and the lines are dropped, the smell of fresh coffee awaits in the galley. As we cruise back to the wharf we take in the new day with the new light exposing different scenes; it’s a brand new day. Then, for several hours, you cruise through Doubtful Sound and several arms that come off of the fiord, before repeating the journey across the mountain pass and Lake Manapouri. We disembarked from our cruise ship around 10 am and got back onto coach buses to cross the Wilmot Pass. There wasn’t any commentary this time, as we had driven the same road yesterday, but we did stop for photos of the pass. We then sailed across the lake and arrived back in Manapouri around 12 pm.
It was also because I had such an amazing time and was really impressed by the service. The water in Doubtful Sound is pretty cold, but you can jump in if you’re brave enough! I recommend bringing swimwear in case you do feel the urge once you get there – it’s always best to be prepared. And even if not, swimwear is a good idea for kayaking expeditions. It can get chilly out in Doubtful Sound, so make sure you bring some layers with you.
